Synthesis

----The whole deal of new world against england has bee a constant back and fourth for me. of course i started for the americans, i mean we always go with our family. But as i learn more i get more confused on my veiw and whos side i stand on. The main issue is that Britian wants to tax America, they find their reasoning due to their help and support of the colonies when it comes to war and finacial stimulants like trade and inports from england. A new society cannot function or build with out any support, the ground up takes a long time, England help start the colonies more like from the sky line up. So i started with being on the Americas side, and then , i found the document from The Boston Committee and their pathetic plee for help. this change my veiw and even emarrased me because their we so dramatic. I was a very biased peice that led to a emotion but not facts so as i went to learn more on the foundation of the issue my opinion once again shifted.
-----Watching the movie, and reading text and other text analysis documents altered my view. Also along with the basic facts added in i got very mixed up. The English gave American that chance and put them where they are, let them live on their land, supported them during war and kept their tradeand ,hence their economy, strong. One view, is that the Americans were being selfish lazy brats and ungratdeful and unwilling to be tribute. The other view is one that the taxing is unfair. That the Americans were angry due to reasonable causes, and that the tax was unfair because it was not placed upon the british. Well according to the movie the only brits who were taxed were ones of very low stature like slaves. And of course any one would take the same treatment of slaves as an insult, and that how they took it. And in my opinion i am still very much undecided.
-----To me, they were being a tad lazy, but maybe their were just trying to establish freedom and without this "lazziness" , we might not have our freedom or it be at such a great spoy as today.

TEXT ANALYSIS

TEXT analysis for Declaration and resolve of the First Continental Congress

Who is writing: Its a combinations in a way. Because in the beginning before the resolved issues and written by the the representatives from the numerous colonies, theres an introduction into it these events and its say that the piece is "selected. arranged and indexed by charles C. Tansill" and the very end of the writing and he could be the one who wrote the intro.

Who is the audience: Its to England , mainly the British parliament

Who do the writers represent: They represent the colonies and the people who believe that the new rules are a tad ridiculous and are not right to force on the colonies, the Americans.

what is being argued/requested: the topic is of all the new laws and the new right the british have taken over the colonists, and the reaction the colonists gave back. the issues and laws which they came up with and then their responses to the ones written by the Brits

How is it being said: Its not really being asked as usual. In earlier responses from colonists the the English government, their response is usually mroe respectful asking and not telling or demanding unlike this one. The colonists are stepping up and basically telling the government how its going to be and that they plain jane do not agree with what their semi rulers are forcing on them and wont really allow it either. I mean they ever revise what the governemnt say/demands the straight up just change it.

JUSTIFACTION: Well they have a right to have an opnion sense they are being affected by all the changes that they obviously disagree with. And the reason why/ how their supporting their alterations to the governments plan is due to the fact that their is lack of representation when these changes were worked through, making it not fair not jsut type deal. Also" The several acts of ...... Which impose duties for the purpose of raising a revenue in Amerca, extend the power of the admiralty courts beyond their ancient limits, dpreive the American subjected of trial by jury" ( after resolved issues) and then also "abolishing the equitable system of English laws" (fourth to last paragraph). As a whole it went against alot of what the colonists were working for in their new found freedom and who they had established themselves to be.

CIRCULAR LETTER OF BOSTON COMMITTE OF CORRESPONDENCE:

-----Was to me like a biased more explained and narrowed view, explained in a different format i guess i should say. But it is obviously biased, talking about the Boston issues with the British parliament and about the possible issues their going ot bring up in the future to " supress the spirit of liberty here". Mainly i believe the writing is based on how Bostons trade has been stopped due to the Boston Tea Party and their not aloud out of their ports and are acutally stopped by british ships until they pay or repay for what they have done. Its also a request letter asking for support against the british, asking them to stop trade. The letters very dramatic, in a way saying how the colonies indeppendence and united powerd relys on this "American liberty, rely on your suspending your trade with Great Britian".

Letter From the New York Committee of Fifty-One to the Bostons Committe of Correspondence:

Obviously its the correspondence to Bostons dramatics letter and plea for help, and to me i believe the respond in a much more calm manner. They do not automatically decid on what they are doing ,but their nice nad do get back to them so they know they are in the process of working through a solution. They believe to rush such a issue that would have such a huge impact of course would not be the best decision. One thing i found interesting was how they refer to eachtoehr as a sister colony, just seems like usually they would refer to as brother colonies. THey of course dont plan to stan by while the American liberty is threatened, but their are said to say that their reply in indecisivness " we lament our inability to relieve your anxiety by a decisive opinion"

essay #1 reflection

My previous philosophy!
SO, when it comes to writing philosophy, mine is not so easily pointed out or even found. I've spent my writing years following rules, following my teacher's philosophy. But there are certain aspects that i have been trained to portray . Vocabulary is very important of course, along with being factual. But i believe if thats all you have then you sound like any other essay. Having those hooks, having that sling of words that flow and ring those are more than just important. Connecting with more then the mind and pocket books is important to me. I believe examining every aspect and branch of the topic, every different view and paying a good amount of attention to all opinions and sides are must haves in writing . Thats how I have wrote in the past, have been forced to write. I covered the basics, but with what we have explored in the last couple days of class. I will most definently, better develop my philosophy. Make it more of heart, more of me. Now i believe that writing should be similar to an encryption of the soul. A true mind exploration and i am gonna try to better communicate that in my future writing pieces.

I believe how my philosophy has changed thus far is that its become way more developed. What i mean by that is that its actually more than just what every high school student is writing. I've learned the process, that hard work is always the best and overall knowledge is better then just the topic your searching and this is what i wrote in class earlier today during the free write:

Through this long tedious writing process, i have learned a goof amount. Infact such a large amount that even thinking of it all together as a whole, causes mass confusion. My process has been turned inside out , flipped, somersaulted every contorted acrobatic movement you can think of to get where it is now. My mind set and philosophy use to be a logical one. One given to me by my teachers of thoughtless writing consumed with fats pointless to the readers. I have learned what writing really is about, well I'm on my way there and it gives me a great relief to know my writing deserves a voices and stated purpose. My writing process no incorporates more than just the facts, it includes the thoughts, that analysis and relevant purpose and more importantly me. I realize how to write an essay on a topic you need to know mush mush more than just the topic itself.
Finally, for once in my education writing about history has become more than just the history and its facts. I've realized that history most has a biased view and its now something I'M aloud to have on opinion about as well. A real, true heart felt opinion, not one I've heard that i help elaborate on.

FINALE BACON REBELLION edit ... as in finale finale :)

Emily Furgason
Bacon Rebellion Essay

------Of the new government of Pennsylvania, William Penn wrote in 1682 that “When the great wise God had made the world, of all his creatures , it pleased him to chuse man his Deputy to rule it: and to fit him for so great a charge and trust he did not only quoalify him with skill and power, but with integrity to use them justly. This native goodness was equally his honour and his happiness, and whilst he stood here, all went well; there was no need of coercive or compulsive means; the precept of divine love and truth, in his bossom , was the guide and keeper of his innocency. But lust prevailing against duty, made a lamentable breach upon it [.]” Little did Penn know when he wrote his fundamentals to the new government of Pennsylvania that, not only was he reciting the past, but prophesying an undeniable future. For, since the very creation of the world, it has been human nature that greed will seep through and corrupt even the most “divine” of intentions.
------With the discovery of the New World came new opportunities for power. The saying that “power corrupts and ultimate power corrupts ultimately” has literally been a theme since the earliest times of history. People will often give in to the chance of power. This theme is easily traced to and laced throughout the historical event of Bacon's Rebellion. In which, through the hope of the people to do good, power corruption within the form of Nathaniel Bacon corrupted any and all good intentions and turned it into a bloody battle due to his selfish greed. Some say that this Virginian rebellion occurred because of the government’s greed, or maybe even the Indians or Colonist, but without Bacon to connect it all, those fragments are just pieces of a broken puzzle. Nathaniel bacon used the people, and government of the Virginian colony for his own personal and selfish reasons, and in doing so, he began, led and continued Bacon’s Rebellion
------For years, Virginia had been having trouble between people and government. The people were growing sick and tired of the lack of support shown by their government against the people’s enemy, the government pay check, the Indians. Mathews writes "These [ people] at heads of James and York Rivers.... grew impatient at the many slaughters of their neighbors and rose for their Defense choosing Mr. Bacon for their Leader (2nd paragraph, document 20: The Beginning,Progress and conclusion of Bacon’s Rebellion in Virginia in the Years 1675 and 1676) . Nathaniel Bacon had many underlying characteristics that put him in the perfect position for the leader of Bacon's Rebellion. Soon after, Mathews calls Bacon's approach to the current situations of Virginia as “humble” he readily contradicts Bacon’s perceived and sited “calm” characteristics and he admits "Other than effects of his passion, and new occasion of Avarice, to both of which he was by the common Vogue or opinion more then a little Addicted..." In making this comment Mathews argues there was more to Bacon than a calm do-gooder of the people. Bacon was known as "blackhair'd and of an ominous, pensive melancholy Aspect ... not much given to talk, ... of a most imperious and dangerous Pride of heart, despising the wiser of his neighbours for their Ignorance, and very ambitious and arrogant."(http://www.bookrags.com/biography/nathaniel-bacon/) The mind has a tendency to hear and not listen, to look and not see, usually according to preference. His Motives for the rebellion and leading of the people were clear to those who would see it, but many were easily blinded by the hope of change and chance of their voice being heard, from whom this chance came from was over looked. This blinding veil placed over the people eyes gave him great opportunity to slip in with his uneasy faults and lead them without being questioned. I would compare this portrayal of Bacon to a machine made to question and go against authority. Pride a key factor in discomfort of stature, of, wanting to be bigger and better, being the oil that runs through the veins of this power hungry machine of a man, one especially willing to lead a rebellion for power and other selfish reasons. And then as I continued my research, this was only proven to be truer.
------ Finding that the very reason Bacon had left his home due to complications and disagreements with family and government in his previous home of Suffolk England, was no surprise and helped me better understand the machine that I was examining . Bacon had moved to Jamestown Virginia for a new start. And with help of the Governor , Sir William Berkley, the main power within the town, Bacon was able to settle peacefully in two homes along the James River. Sadly, but to no surprise, as I said early he was a “power hungry machine of a man” and the peace did not and of course could not last for long.
-----Common sense seems to dictate that your actions of now depict who you will be later. Your life and its events mold you into who you are. A common over looked factor of Bacon's Rebellion, is Bacon’s life before Virginia. The similarities between his home of Stiffkey and Virginia leave no surprise that the common and familiar discomforts of his old life, would rise again in Virginia. From his past in his home of Stiffkey Bacon had already spent time developing a bitterness and questionable attitude for authority, “ Bacon was constantly on the lookout for signs of corruption and mismanagement in Church and State, and in this volume his papers are full of evidence patiently collected for some further campaign against the forces of darkness ( usually personified in another equally crotchety Norfolk magnate, Sir Arthur Heveningham, and his ally the Lord Lieutenant, Lord Hundson)” the “papers” being referred to in this quote are Nathaniel Bacon’s personal documents and writings. This excerpt is an overview of the writing themselves done by Diarmaid MacCulloch. The quote continues talking about changes Bacon yearned for in his home town of Stiffkey, of course most changes going against the powers that be.
------Even early in this writing, Bacon’s emotional issues build a sturdy foundation for our man of the rebellion. These issues are brought up in the topic of marrying off his daughter, it is said it was[N]ot without trouble and complication, much of is cause by his own ineptitude in emotional matter: a characteristic most obvious in the more personal correspondence.” What many don’t realize, is that his reaction to the issues of Virginia was more of repetition of routine. Bacon had never been able to control himself, as shown in the previous quotes, “in emotional matters” and any one familiar with Bacon's Rebellion can agree that for Bacon and the colonist, and even the Indians, the process was an emotional matter. Bacon had spent a life of rebellion; it had become his outlet of bitterness towards the things he felt were “the force of darkness” which Bacon usually associated as authority figures. Virginia was once again a chance to get back at authority for the people? No, for Bacon's own bitterness and greed of power that had consumed him sense very early stages of his life.
-------Conclusions, which Mathews and MacCulloch put forward, add weight to the argument that Bacon’s actions were in no way in support of the colonists, but more of a natural, very Bacon like, reaction. Bacon's actions were not to help the people. All his life he had been more of a “keep to his self type of guy” and according to Diarmaid MacCulloch piece “ The English Historical Review” “seems an unhappy figure virtually the only humour in his correspondence occurs in letters from his sister…. Dr. Smith draws attention to his remarkable lack of contact with his gentry neighbours except on business; the account books show that they never came to dinner at Stiffkey, and they rarely wrote to him except about administrative matter. Small wonder that this lonely, energetic man turned to religion and politics to fill his day” There would be no reason to abandon this habit in The New World, he had left home on sore terms, and I doubt was ready to make nice with the world after a life of fighting it.
------So Bacon now had control of the people, gotten support for his life long battle against authority. He stirred their anger, their bitterness of authority, a routine he had been repeating for very long. And in doing so, the beginning of the rebellion began. Now he just had to use and abuse his new found power, and he directed it at an excellent opportunity, a chance for another success in the power department. “This morning all men were ordered to lay by their Arms... Mr. Bacon with at least 400 on foot ... 120 on horse entered the sandy bay" and further into the quote its reads" his soldiers mounting their Guns ready to fire; Immediately ( for in this minute if not all night have been in a flame) the Burgesses make it their request to the Governor to Issue forth such a commission.... Saturday 24th the forced commission was delivered." (Document 29 from William sherwood) Bacon had given his new found followers an outlet, like a good leader should of course! What started as the people’s true intentions of changing the community for the better led to threats and force. There had been multiple times previous, where Bacon had asked the government for commission, and every time previous the proposition had been denied. But with this new power, Bacon led the people to threaten and overthrow the government, he let their support lead him further into power and progressed the rebellion in result. But there were still other possibilities and factors of the community even yet to be exploited for Bacon's benefit.
----- Sense the beginning of Bacon's stay in Virginia the governor, Sir William Berkley, had treated him with more than the utmost courtesy. He gave him homes along the river and even placed him on the council ,but it did not stop there in the least. Not only did he have power over the government by the number of people which followed him , but he held a soft spot in Berkley’s heart. More, in a way, a seed he had planted in Berkley to sway in his favor. Showing that not only did he lead this rebellion by the luck and stupidity of the people , but truly by his sheer talent for trickery. 'Mr. Bacon have you forgot to be a Gentleman?' "No, may it please your Honour," Answered Mr.Bacon; "Then," replied the Governour. " I'll take your parole," and gave him his liberty."( DOCUMENT #25) This showed that Bacon no longer was under the control of the government, the basic rules began to not apply . This event happened in late May of 1676 and in the following June , in an assembly based on Bacon's arrest , not only was he released from his sentence but afterMr. bacon upon one knew at the Bar, deliver a Sheet of paper Confessing his Crimes, and begging Pardon of God the King and the Governour[.]” subsequently, “[T]he Governour, Starting up from his Chair a Third time said , “Mr. Bacon! If you will live Civilly but till the next [session of the] Quarter Court, I’ll promise to restore you again to your place [on the Governor’s Council].”(document 25) Bacon went from being a convict on trial to once again on the Council, he was able to use his power over the government, thanks to his persuasive qualities, to get out of trial, once again for selfish gain. The hopes of the people in Bacon led to his personal prideful power, which helped lead to his power over government leading to selfish gain of having ultimate control of his surroundings. All in all Bacon had once again created a key factor, thanks to him, to move the rebellion forward even more.
-----My discussion of Nathaniel Bacon and his Rebellion addresses a larger matter of our history and present events in general. This theme of Bacon's Rebellion was not only one of yesterday, but a reoccurring event that started too far back to trace and most definitely did not end in the 1700’s. This essay shows that the past of people’s results in who they are, and thus their actions. This point relates easily to our government and events in recent times such as the presidential election.
------The colonists looked at Bacon for what he portrayed in that moment, which was a mistake. They did not consider his past as a factor of who he really was or how he would act when given opportunity of power. Due to this mistake, the colonist hope of change and less bloodshed turned out in a brutal rebellion full of blood shed.
-----Similarly to how the colonist lightly considered Bacon’s background, today we view the candidates past as small, almost insignificant details. It’s very important to not just realize what their saying now, but what they’ve said and done in the past. It is vital we consider their past when judging the quality of a candidate.
-----The people did not judge the quality of Bacon. They trusted Bacon from the get go and he got to play them like his very own instrument. My point is not that we should deny people a second chance, but we need to be wary of the side affects of their past. I do agree that people deserve a second chance, but a point that needs emphasizing is that old habits die hard, very hard. So when looking at a candidate knowing their background is incredibly important when sizing them up for the presidency.
-----It’s important not to make the same mistake the colonists did, do our research and make the connections between past and present. It is important to look at the past, whether at historical events like Bacon’s Rebellion or just at people lives like our future leaders. By reflecting on the past we are able to understand where we are today, and where we’re headed. Knowing this, we must research when were choosing something as huge as a president who has the ability to impact every aspect of our everyday lives. Bacon’s followers didn’t have the extensive resources that we have today that allow us to learn more of our leaders past and present lives. Due to the people’s lack of knowledge on Bacon’s background, they trusted Bacon's justifications for rebelling. As a result Bacon, a greedy and selfishness man, driven by the intent to retaliate against authority, began, led and continued a rebellion of unjust reason.

another draft

------Of the new government of Pennsylvania, William Penn wrote in 1682 that “When the great wise God had made the world, of all his creatures , it pleased him to chuse man his Deputy to rule it: and to fit him for so great a charge and trust he did not only quoalify him with skill and power, but with integrity to use them justly. The saying that “power corrupts and ultimate power corrupts ultimately” has been a theme around literally sense the history of the earliest times, people will often give in to the chance of power. Its recognizable in events even today such as politics, where good intentions don’t always end the way they were well intended. This figure portrayed of Bacon, the character, is one that I would see as a time bomb ticking, a machine made to question and go against authority. Pride, a key factor in discomfort of stature, of wanting to be bigger and better is easily a characteristics that you would find in a power hungry man, one especially willing to lead a rebellion for power and other selfish reasons. And then as I continued my research, this was only proven to be more true.
------ Finding that the very reason Bacon had left his home due complications and disagreements with family and government in his previous home of Suffolk England, was no surprise and pushed my search further. Bacon had moved to Jamestown Virginia for a new start. And with help of the Governour , Sir William Berkley the main power within the town, Bacon was able to settle peacefully in two homes along the James River. Sadly, but to no surprise, as I said early he was a “ticking time bomb” the peace did not and of course could not last for long.
-----Common sense seems to dictate that your actions of now depict who you will be later, your life and its events mold you into who you are. A common over looked factor of Bacons Rebellion , is Bacon’s life before Virginia. The similarities between his home of Stiffkey and Virginia leave no surprise that the common and familiar discomfourts of his old life, would rise again in Virginia. The quote continues talking about causes Bacon yearned for in his home town of Stiffkey, of course most causes going against the powers that be.
------Even early in this writing Bacon’s emotional issues that build a sturdy foundation for our man of the rebellion, are brought up when the topic of marrying off his daughter. it is said it was “ [N]ot without trouble and complication, much of is cause by his own ineptitude in emotional matter: a characteristic most obvious in the more personal correspondence.” What many don’t realize, is that his reaction to the issues of Virginia was more of repetition of routine. Bacon had never been able to control himself, as shown in the previous quotes, “in emotional matters” and any one familiar with Bacons Rebellion can agree that for Bacon and the colonist , and even the Indians , the process was an emotional matter. He had spent his life going against authority ever sense he dropped out of school before earning a degree. Bacon had spent a life of rebellion; it had become his outlet of bitterness towards the things he felt were “the force of darkness” which as an example in previous quotes, usually was authority figures. Virginia was once again a chance to get back at authority for the wrong doing, for the people? No for Bacons own bitterness and greed of power that had consumed him sense very early stages of his life.
-----These conclusions, which Mathwes MacCulloch put forward, shown none the less that Bacons actions were not to help the people, all his life he had been more of a “keep to his self type of guy” and “seems an unhappy figure virtually the only humour in his correspondence occurs in letters from his sister…. Dr smith draws attention to his remarkable lack of contact with hin gentry neighbours except on business; the account books show that they never came to dinner at Stiffkey, and they rarely wrote to him except about administrative matter. There would be no reason to abandon this habit in The New World, he had left home on sore terms, and I doubt was ready to make nice with the world after a life of fighting it.
-------The mind has a tendency to hear and not listen, to look and not see, all according to preference. His Motives were shown clear to those who would see it, but many were easily blinded by the hope of change and chance of their voice being heard that who this chance came from was over looked. Like many aspects of this process of evil winning out good, their views had been corrupted. He had no other gain in this purpose but power, one personal selfish gain that the People of Virginia threw at him from the get go. They had placed him as leader, and once Bacon stirred their anger, he gave them an outlet, a longed for solution that was accessible through him. Similar to the outlets he gave himself towards his anger of authoritative figures. He Earned the peoples trust, and even more important their support, and led them in his twisted emotion , anger led rebellion.
------He had gotten past step one to ultimate control and power of a community. To over power a body you must control the limbs . The parts of this body, the Virginian colony, as reviewed before , was the three main groups, people, government, and last but not least the Indians. So step one was completed, he now controlled the people thanks to their trust they entrusted with him when they made him their leader. Now he just had to use and abuse his new found power, and he directed it at an excellent opportunity, a chance for more power. “This morning all mean were ordered to lay by their Arms... Mr. Bacon with at least 400 on foot ... 120 on horse entered the sandy bay"(3rd paragraph) " his soldiers mounting their Guns ready to fir; Immediately ( for in this minute if not all night have been in a flame) the Burgesses make it their request to the Governor to Issue forth such a commission.... The hopes of the people in Bacon led to his personal prideful power, which helped lead to his power over government leading to selfish gain of having ultimate control of his surroundings.
-----Now with the sway of Berkley and the possible force of the people to persuade the rest of government, Bacon was able to do as he pleased. More importantly, sense it was now possible he led the people in their battles and massacres against the Indians. He did this to secure his followers which in the same secured his power. Bacon was now able to please the people, which meant the people continued trusting and supporting Bacon, because now he could act with out the government to worry about, they were proven small distractions. He helped increase the conflict between people and government by simply joining it. Bacon grew the anger of the colonists, harnessing their anger then giving power and opportunity to the people to do what they wanted through his overthrowing of the government, to get revenge on the Indians. Nathaniel Bacon began the rebellion with the corruption of the peoples emotions and plans to gain himself power, led it with the trust and support then continued it by creating larger disagreements and anger between the people and the government, and then helped further on the Rebellion by gaining control of the government and using this power to act out against the Indians, other wise known as Bacons rebellion.

another little rough draft edit before drill...

“When the great wise God had made the world, of all his creatures , it pleased him to chuse man his Deputy to rule it: and to fit him for so great a charge and trust he did not only quoalify him with skill and power, but with integrity to use them justly. This native goodness was equally his honour and his happiness, and whilst he stood here, all went well; there was no need of coercive or compulsive means;the precept of divine love and truth, in his bossom , was the guide and keeper of his innocency. But lust prevailing against duty, made a lamentable breach upon it[.]” ( William Penn; Frame of Government of Pennsylvania) Little did Penn know when he wrote his fundamentals to the new government of Pennsylvania in 1682, that not only was he reciting the past, but prophesying an undeniable future. Sense time began, sense the very creation of our world, it has been human nature that greed will seep through and corrupt even the most “divine” of intentions. Throughout the 1600-1800’s new possibilities were springing up all around with discovery of the New World. Many saw it as a new start, a chance to get out of over crowded Europe , but a tone that over took the one of peace and hope, that sounded louder than the rest even through the greatest of efforts, was the one of greed and wealth. The renowned saying that “power corrupts and ultimate power corrupts ultimately” as been a theme around literally sense the history of the earliest times, people will often give in to the chance of power. Even god himself greatest purpose , greatest hope was overcome by peoples greed for the next best thing, sense the beginning when Adam and Eve gave in to the temptation to be more like the almighty. And then this theme further is easily traced to and laced throughout the historical event of Bacons Rebellion . In which through the hope of the people to do good, to succeed in a cause they saw as one of hope, power corruption within the form of Nathaniel Bacon corrupted any and all good intentions and turned it into a bloody battle due to his selfish greed. Some say that this Virginian rebellion occurred because of the governments greed, or maybe even the Indians or Colonist, but without Bacon to connect it all, those fragment are just pieces of a broken puzzle. Nathaniel bacon used the people, and government of the Virginian colony for his own selfish purpose, and in doing so, he began, led and continued Bacon’s Rebellion.(change transition below)

In the beginning, Nathaniel Bacon was known as "blackhair'd and of an ominous, pensive melancholy Aspect ... not much given to talk, ... of a most imperious and dangerous Pride of heart, despising the wiser of his neighbours for their Ignorance, and very ambitious and arrogant."(http://www.bookrags.com/biography/nathaniel-bacon/) And after complications and disagreements with family and government in his previous home of Suffolk England, he moved to Jamestown Virginia for a new start. Migration to the New World seemed like a great cure to his troubles. With help of the Governour , Sir William Berkley, Bacon was able to settle peacefully in two homes along the James River, but the peace did not last long by any means.

For years, Virginia had been having trouble between the different groups and sections of the population. The common people and Indians were at constant battle fighting over land that both thought was theirs. Adding on, The Government, who had made the mess by giving away land that was not theirs, refused to do anything about it in fear of threatening the trade, and risking their new found wealth. It had divided the people with disputes between government and people, and people and the Indians. Thomas Mathews writes "These [ people] at heads of James and York Rivers.... grew impatient at the many slaughters of their neighbors and rose for their Defense choosing Mr. Bacon for their Leader (2nd paragraph, document 20) A excerpt from Thomas Mathews writing of “The beginning, progress and conclusion of Bacons Rebellion in Virginia in the Years 1675-76” written in 1705 . “ Soon after Mathews calls Bacons approach to the current situations “humble” he readily contradicts Bacon’s perceived and sited “calm” characteristics with "Other than effects of his passion, and new occasion of Avarice, to both of which he was by the common Vogue or opinion more then a little Addicted..." In making this comment Mathews argues there was more to Bacon than a calm do-gooder of the people. So then what were Bacons motives? What was his purpose for helping the people if not for the people ? Mathews theory of Bacon’s drive being one of greed, “avarice” and other underlying intentions is extremely useful because it begins the root of the issue, the beginning of the thought process of where does this behavior come from ?

Common sense seems to dictate that your actions of now depict who you will be later, your life and its events mold you into who you are. A common over looked factor of Bacons Rebellion , is Bacons life before Virginia and the similarities between the issues he encountered there and the ones of Virginia. From his past in his home of Stiffkey Bacon had already spent time obtaining a bitterness and questionable attitude for authority, “ Bacon was constantly on the lookout for signs of corruption and mismanagement in Church and State, and in this volume his papers are full of evidence patiently collected for some further campaign against he forces of darkness ( usually personified in another equally crotchety Norfolk magnate, Sir Arthur Heveningham, and his ally the Lord Lieutenant, Lord Hundson)’ The “papers” in this quoted referring to Nathaniel \Bacons personal documents and writings , this quoted in an overview of the writing themselves done by Diarmaid MacCulloch. The quote continues talking about causes Bacon yearned for in his home town of Stiffkey, of course most causes going against the powers that be.

Even early in this writing Bacon’s emotional issues are brought up when the topic of marrying off his daughter it is said it was “ [N]ot without trouble and complication, much of is cause by his own ineptitude in emotional matter: a characteristic most obvious in the more personal correspondence.” What many don’t realize, is that his reaction to the issues of Virginia was more of repetition of routine. Bacon had spent a life of rebellion, it had become his outlet of bitterness towards the things he felt were “ the force of darkness” which as an example in previous quotes, usually was authority figures. Virginia was once again a chance to get back at authority for the wrong doing, for the people ? No for Bacons own bitterness and greed of power that had consumed him sense very early stages of his life.

These conclusions, which Mathwes MacCulloch put forward, shown none the less that Bacons actions were not to help the people, all his life he had been more of a “keep to his self type of guy” and “seems an unhappy figure virtually the only humour in his correspondence occurs in letters from his sister…. Dr smith draws attention to his remarkable lack of contact with hin gentry neighbours excep on business; the account books sho that they never camt to dinner at stiffkey, and they rarely wrote to him except about administrative matter. Small wonder that this lonely, energetic man turned to religion and politics to fill his day” (The Engligh Historical Review of Diarmaid MacCulloch). There would be no reason to abandon this habit in The New World, he had left home on sore terms, and I doubt was ready to make nice with the world after a life of fighting it.

He had gotten past step one to ultimate control and power of a community. Saturday 24th the forced commission was delivered." (Document 29) What started as the people’s true intentions of changing the community for the better led to threats and force. There had been multiple times previous, where Bacon had asked the government for commission, and every time previous the proposition had been denied. But with this new power, Bacon led the people to threaten and overthrow the government, he let their support lead him further into power.

Sense the beginning of Bacons stay in Virginia the governor, Sir William Berkley, and treated him with more than the utmost courtesy. He gave him homes along the river and even placed him on the council but it did not stop there. But it did not stop there in the least, not only did he have power over the government by the number of people which followed him , but he held a soft spot in Berkley’s heart. This event happened in late May of 1676 and in the following June , in a Assembly based on Bacons arrest , not only was he released from his sentence but after “ Mr. bacon upon one knew at the Bar, deliver a Sheet of paper Confessing his Crimes, and begging Pardon of God the King and the Governour[.]” subsequently, “[T]he Governour, Starting up from his Chair a Third time said , “Mr. Bacon! If you will live Civilly but till the next [session of the] Quarter Court, I’ll promise to restore you again to your place [on the Governor’s Council].” Bacon went from being a convict on trial to once again on the Council, he was able to use his power over the government, thanks to his persuasive qualities , to get out of trial , once again for selfish gain. The hopes of the people in Bacon led to his personal prideful power, which helped lead to his power over government leading to selfish gain of having ultimate control of his surroundings.

Now with the sway of Berkley and the possible force of the people to persuade the rest of government, Bacon was able to do as he pleased. Albany plan of the union 1754

Who is writting: delegates from the colonies ; Benjamin Frankline, Thomas Hutchinson, Morison, Samuel Elios, Henry steel Commager, William E. Luachtenburg

Who is the audience: King George III, his ministers and colonial assemblies as well as the colonies and leaders of head powers of the colonies so they know whats up!

Who do the writers represent: The writers represent the colonies/ are delegates from all the colonies. But also the new grand and presidential council i believe.

What is being requested/argued: Well the purpose of this is due to a common argument from the fear that in redoing the whole government the king would obtain to much power, there for bashing the point of the colonies freedom they have been working for all this time. The purpose of what their requesting is new outline/laws and rules for the new government in the form of the Grand council and Presidential government, their responsibilities, purposes and allowances.

In what way/tone/manner/ is it being said: Its being requested in a proper/respectful tone like most primary documents that are written about or to powers at be of in government positions.

Proof and or justification: There i fear of an invasion of the French, and this government, a united stronger government in purpose to better defend them selves. But of course they still want to keep the colonies independent which has been the point of the Americas all along. A way not to give too much power to the king and a way for the colonists to remain in control somewhat independent.

Equiano, Slave ships/ middle passage

I don't understand how people could be so horrible. How could anyone watch or make some one suffer through that. Even in the view of the trade/economy, they lost profit due to the condition they forced. I don't get how people could be so evil and more importantly, where did that evil go? Human nature does not end, do we hide it better now or do we justify it as they did? Do they feel and think as if its not big deal , maybe similar to a cause such as abortion. Packed ships where people would die from the smell, how could a person force any one to endure this...

Nathaniel Bacon used the people and government of the Virginian colony for his own selfish purposes, and in so doing, he began, led and continued Bacon's Rebellion.

POINTS I WANT TO GO OVER

I)HOW BACON USED THE PEOPLE, HOW THE USE OF THE PEOPLE LED TO HIS POWER.
-----A: Bacon used the people by playing on their emotions along with what was important to them.
-----------1:DOCUMENT 20 "These [ people[ at heads of James and York Rivers.... grew impatient at the many slaughters of their neighbors and rose for their Defense choosing Mr. Bacon for their Leader" (2nd paragraph) Further quotes between this and the next may need to be added "other than effects of his passion, and new occasion of Avarice, to both of which he was by the common Vogue or opinion more then a little Addicted..."
----------------a:THE ANSWERS RIGHT THERE, they should of turned back then, they call Bacon humble then straight to how he was addicted to what he wanted.
--(how led to power)--i: Once Bacon stirred the anger, he gave them an outlet, a longed for solution that was accessible through him, he the people trust, and even more important their support which was just more control.

"These [ people[ at heads of James and York Rivers.... grew impatient at the many slaughters of their neighbors and rose for their Defense choosing Mr. Bacon for their Leader (2nd paragraph, document 20) This was quoted from Thomas Mathews “The beginning, progree and conclusion of Bacons Rebellion in Virginia in the Years 1675-76” written in 1705 . “ Then barely three sentences after this statement Mathews states, "Other than effects of his passion, and new occasion of Avarice, to both of which he was by the common Vogue or opinion more then a little Addicted..." He had no other gain in this purpose but power, one personal selfish gain that the People of Virginians threw at him from the get go. Once Bacon stirred their anger, he gave them an outlet, a longed for solution that was accessible through him. He Earned the peoples trust, and even more important their support.

II)HOW BACON's POWER OF PEOPLE LED TO REBELLION
------A:Once he got control of the people, he used them how he wanted, let their support lead him to power.
-----------1: Mainly any quotes from document 29: " This morning all mean were ordered to lay by their Arms... Mr. Bacon with at least 400 on foot ... 120 on horse entered the sandy bay"(3rd paragraph) " his soldiers mounting their Guns ready to fir; Immediately ( for in this minute if not all night have been in a flame) the Burgesses make it their request to the Governour to Issue forth such a commission.... Saturday 24th the forced commission was delivered."
----------------a:How he used the people to sway, threaten the government and get power over them as well. Such as the event of asking for commission, first denied then granted with force/power he used of the people.

2nd body paragraph ROUGH
: mixed in with the first section

III)HOW BACON USED THE GOVERNMENT, AND HOW THIS LED TO HIS POWER:
------A:Bacon Used the government through the soft spot Berkley had for him and threats.
------------1:'Mr. Bacon have you forgot to be a Gentleman?' "No, may it please your Honour," Answered Mr.Bacon; "Then," replied the Governour. " I'll take your parole," and gave him his liberty."( DOCUMENT #25)
That quote or the one at the end of that document. MAYBE THE END QUOTE TO SUPPORT "i".
----------------a: The time he got out of his trial by playing to Berkley's emotional side
--(How led to power)--i:This showed that Bacon was no longer under control to the government, gave him even power of them as well as the people.

3rd body paragraph ROUGH:

-------He had gotten past step one to ultimate control and power of a community. To over power a body you must control the parts. The parts of this body, the Virginian colony, as we went over before , was the three main groups, people, government, and last but not least the Indians. Saturday 24th the forced commission was delivered." (Document 29) What started as the peoples true intentions of changing the community for the better led to threats and force. There had been multiple times previous, where Bacon had asked the government for commission, and every time previous the proposition had been denied. But with this new power, Bacon led the people to threaten and overthrow the government, he let their support lead him further into power.
-------Sense the beginning of Bacons stay in Virginia the governor, Sir William Berkley, and treated him with more than the utmost courtesy. He gave him homes along the river and even placed him on the council but it did not stop there. But it did not stop there in the least, not only did he have power over the government by the number of people which followed him , but he held a soft spot in Berkley’s heart. More, in a way, a seed he had planted in Berkley to sway in his favor. Showing that not only did he lead this rebellion by the luck and stupidty of the people , but truly by his sheer talent for trickery. This event happened in late May of 1676 and in the following June , in a Assembly based on Bacons arrest , not only was he released from his sentence but after “ Mr. bacon upon one knew at the Bar, deliver a Sheet of paper Confessing his Crimes, and begging Pardon of God the King and the Governour[.]” subsequently, “the Governour, Starting up from his Chair a Third time said , “Mr. Bacon! If you will live Civily but till the next [session of the] Quarter Court, I’ll promise to restore you again to your place [on the Governor’s Council].” Bacon went from being a convict on trial to once again on the Council, he was able to use his power over the government, thanks to his persuasive qualities , to get out of trial , once again for selfish gain. The hopes of the people in Bacon led to his personal prideful power, which helped lead to his power over government leading to selfish gain of having ultimate control of his surroundings.

IV)HOW THE POWER OVER GOVERNMENT LED TO BACON'S REBELLION
------A:With his ability to manipulate the government, there was no stopping him, he could do what he wanted without consequence.
-----------1:Document 29 last sentence is a possibility " on Monday morning Mr. Bacon with his men marched out of Town..." Further this quote with details of this event. (google) = http://www.bookrags.com/research/bacons-rebellion-aaw-01/ .... 6th paragraph.
----------------a:find the events of that day, explain how not one stopped them. This power of over the government let him lead the rebellion in the way he wished, went and raided as he pleased.

4th paragraph ROUGH:

previous section

i say ?? or maybe addition to 2nd main point slash summary
-----Now with the sway of Berkley and the possible force of the people to persuade the rest of government, Bacon was able to do as he pleased. More importantly , sense it was now possible he led the people in their battles and massacres against the Indians . He did this to secure his followers which in the same secured his power. Bacon was now able to please the people, which meant the people continued trusting and supporting Bacon, because now he could act with out the government to worry about, they were proven small distractions. He helped increase the conflict between people and government by simply joining it. Bacon grew the anger of the colonists, harnessing their anger then giving power and opportunity r to the people to do what they wanted through his overthrowing of the government, to get revenge on the Indians. Nathaniel Bacon began the rebellion with the corruption of the people emotions and plans to gain himself power, led it with the trust and support then continued it by creating larger disagreements and anger between the people of the government, and then helped further on the Rebellion by gaining control of the government and using this power to act out against the Indians, other wise known as Bacons rebellion.

CONCLUSION:This theme of Bacons Rebellion was not only one of the yesterdays, a reoccurring event that started in the dawn of time and did not end in the 1700’s. The rise and race to the top has become a human instinct. Examples are all around us, in our tycoons, presidents, and great intentions are easily corrupted. And if the power itself won’t corrupt, the money will, passions turn into addictions, good intentions can even turn into positions of fault. Great example is the presidency, constantly, almost with every candidate is example of pure intentions, some not as pure as others, that don’t turn out as many wish. Weather a candidate is running for the power of for the opportunity to make a change, is a questions that can only be answered with opinions. But in their actions were given peaks to their thoughts, their passion, weather it be power or change for the better. We presidents such as bush with great intentions that just don’t turn out for the best , this is an inevitable fate . I know this isn’t finished and needs work but that’s why its my rough

HYPOTHESIS/THESIS numba 2

HYPOTHESIS: Was the common human mistake (find another word) of lust over virtue the very things that kept Bacons rebellion going and what built up to it? Its something that happened all throughout the colonies so was it inevitable ?

THESIS: The *Greed of the Virginian colony began and continuely led Bacons rebellion.

The common historical theme of lust overcoming virtue, is the theme the led the Virginian colony to the chaos of Bacons rebellion?

* Maybe greed is not the correct word for the feeling or urge im trying to portray. My thesis does not represent what i want to talk about... something to do with power but Isnt that greed? talk to craig on revising thesis.

NEED IN ESSAY: each paragraph must have events not only words, 2 examples or more (clear this with craig) sense is giong ot be four pages i need to make this paragraphs detailed and well put together because of that. a strong structure lets hope. Events that are connected not just random because that will support the thesis. Are we suppose to be quote building as we did in the Nathaniel Bacon Exercise last week? Is that format of our essay suppose to be similiar? i mean i know it is BUT exact same? ASK CRAIG . Were suppose to stay focused on they say throughout the whole paper to support the i say right?
INTRO: Add in some william penn to focus on the time unless that is too irellevant.
Of course thesis included then structure possibly the same as exercise.

I: started with Greed of land between all the VIRGINIAN colonists and the indians
REMEMBER I HAVE TO EXPLAIN WHY IT WAS GREED . Not just state the events i took as a greedy moment. Explain event then return the the thesis, how does it connect.
A: government coming and just taking the land of the indians GREED they just wanted more and more, take take take take.
1:then giving away land that was not theres
a: led to the indians outburst
i: which led to the greed of the colonists coming out, it was greed because of the way it was displayed, the reacted ugly and in an innoprppriat matter which shows that it was more then just that they were mad at the unfairness, it was the indians land first but they were to consumed in greed ot even notice. NOT STRONG FOUNDATION, need to reorgnize.
B: THIS TURNED INTO NATHANIEL BACONS CHANCE to gain his power.

II:Being continued further with Nathianel Bacons greed for power
A: Explaining his greed, support the reasons why it was greed. Possibly his reasoning that was not so strong and based in the correct area. How he acted innapropraitly in example as
1: How he went against government in exxagerated way
a) how that was connected to thesis.

III:And then prolonged with the governments greed of money aka trade .
A:THEY WOULDNT GIVE IN, elobrate . (DONT BELIEVE IN THIS CRAIG !!!)

JSTOR search

At first i had some issues not getting results but I've never been to good at searching so this is no surprise. One thing that was different and something i found refreshing is that i found more sites about the Indians of that time. In the articles we've read the natives have been mentioned but were never the focus. These were not necessarily useful but some of the extra information that was not focused on the rebellion but on the time for the Indians , to me was just another helpful perspective. This search process has given me more views and opinions to choose from such as a paper from Sir. William Berkley. It is obvious to me i need to work on my search techniques though , I've just never been good at it , maybe never showed how but hopefully ill get better at searching as we use this engine more. One thing that was in many of the cited sources was The William and Mary Quarterly, it was in almost every single source that i found or looked at.

Winthrope quotes

1) I believe the quote or this certian part of the sermon is a relation between the puritans religion and how they need to work together to prepare the "New England". How seperated they are nothin, disorderly, but together "when united, it is become the most perfect and best proportioned body in the world[.]"
1- the benefit of a well coordinated body is that , sense he was the leader, of course its easier to lead a group that is united.
2-The metophor of the body relates to the PURITAN audience because they are ment to be one body of christ, thats on of their purposes IN LIFE basically so makes them all for the cause!
3-Because they all have the same passion even though seperate. The same drive that brought them to the new world with all the unique purposes, skills that brought them to this new world. Together they can make a pretty well rounded group.
2) To not change but inprove
1-3: New england because they want to press the fact that their making better, that the renewing not just starting over. Their purifying, revising , making it better.
3) Talking about how god gave them this chance and its only right that they pay him tribute and respect and carry on his great works la de da de da... "covenant" was made with him by him giving them this oppertunity.
4)The quote is emphasising that they need to be a good example and hes hoping god will bless them
1-2: Winthrope viewed them as a future example for the following colonists because he wanted to show them how life should be of course that was one of the puritans main deals. Their trying to be the ultimate example and by a city upon a hill, which is a biblical reference there for another thing the audience can relate to but in this translation meaning they will be watched . First of their kind they need to start with a good rep.
