Winthrope quotes

1) I believe the quote or this certian part of the sermon is a relation between the puritans religion and how they need to work together to prepare the "New England". How seperated they are nothin, disorderly, but together "when united, it is become the most perfect and best proportioned body in the world[.]"
1- the benefit of a well coordinated body is that , sense he was the leader, of course its easier to lead a group that is united.
2-The metophor of the body relates to the PURITAN audience because they are ment to be one body of christ, thats on of their purposes IN LIFE basically so makes them all for the cause!
3-Because they all have the same passion even though seperate. The same drive that brought them to the new world with all the unique purposes, skills that brought them to this new world. Together they can make a pretty well rounded group.
2) To not change but inprove
1-3: New england because they want to press the fact that their making better, that the renewing not just starting over. Their purifying, revising , making it better.
3) Talking about how god gave them this chance and its only right that they pay him tribute and respect and carry on his great works la de da de da... "covenant" was made with him by him giving them this oppertunity.
4)The quote is emphasising that they need to be a good example and hes hoping god will bless them
1-2: Winthrope viewed them as a future example for the following colonists because he wanted to show them how life should be of course that was one of the puritans main deals. Their trying to be the ultimate example and by a city upon a hill, which is a biblical reference there for another thing the audience can relate to but in this translation meaning they will be watched . First of their kind they need to start with a good rep.
